Value Beyond Value Chains: Case Study Collection Private Sector Companies Engaging Beyond Their Own Value Chains

This document collates case studies from private sector companies and financial actors that are collaborating with governments or organisations in producer countries, that are supporting programmes that sit beyond their individual value chains. The document highlights case studies that illustrate a variety of types of collaboration in landscapes, and should be used by private sector actors and practitioners that are seeking to understand why and how engagement beyond value chains can add value to their organisations. The case studies in the document can help develop an understanding of success factors for engagement beyond value chains as well as challenges and lessons in this type of engagement.

Two key takeaways are outlined in the report, developed from an analysis of all the case studies presented. The first takeaway is that investments that support companies’ engagement beyond their value chains, at landscape or jurisdictional level, can help sustain and scale sustainable commodity production. The second takeaway is that private sector finance actors need but may not currently have a clear view of investable opportunities for sustainable commodity production, and tools that enable them to measure and monitor their impact. The case studies outlined in the report include The &Green Fund, The Cocoa & Forests Initiative and The Soft Commodities Forum in the Cerrado among many other initiatives.
