Jurisdictional Approaches: An analysis of Brazil’s states and companies contributions

The policy brief presents a mapping of the status of implementation of JA initiatives in the nine Brazilian states of the Legal Amazon. In the analysis, JA is defined by the characteristics including the involvement of multiple stakeholders in a jurisdiction, co-development and alignment of sustainability goals, and strong leadership from subnational government. The study found that seven out of the nine states of the Legal Amazon responded that they are aware of, and are implementing, JA. However, only 4% of the companies that responded to CDP’s 2020 forests questionnaire engage in the approach. Recommendations of the brief include for proponents to promote greater clarity in the definition of JA, foster structured collaboration between public and private sectors to establish shared environmental goals, and strengthen tools to share experiences among jurisdictional initiatives.
