Implementing the European Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products

This paper shares how landscape approaches and public-private collaboration support regulation compliance in five regions: Central Highlands (Vietnam), Sabah (Malaysia), Grand Mbam (Cameroon), and West Africa (Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire). The paper highlights that pre-competitive company collaboration at jurisdictional scale can support the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and benefit smallholder farmers’ livelihoods.

Findings from IDH’s landscapes show that these approaches can help ensure that solutions are designed in an inclusive way and are implemented collaboratively. The report shares the benefits of landscape approaches for EUDR compliance, which include cost effectiveness, deforestation-free validation, resolution of legality issues and alignment of due diligence.

IDH convenes landscape approaches, facilitating 22 programs in 13 countries. These programs support local authorities and sourcing companies to ensure that cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, and beef produced in these landscapes are deforestation-free and benefit smallholder farmers and their communities
