Accelerating Progress for Nature, Climate and People at Scale: Companies’ Roles and Action

This report focuses on how companies, including but not limited to the forest, land and agricultural (FLAG) sectors, can help accelerate progress towards nature, people and climate goals by contributing to multi-stakeholder collaboration at landscape and jurisdictional scale. The report highlights that the FLAG sector has an important role in the transition to net zero given its significant impact in terms of GHG emissions, and its ability to effect change.

The report highlights three recommendations for these companies:

  • Increase landscape-scale action in sourcing regions and encourage other companies to join efforts;
  • Align resources and support for nature-based solutions to commodity production regions to accelerate progress; and
  • Actively contribute to the development of global frameworks and their implementation guidance.

There are also recommendations for the wider proponents of collaborative efforts to achieve nature, climate and people goals. Stakeholders should actively incentivize companies to invest in land-use transformation within sourcing regions. Proponents should also collaborate with and seek inputs from certain stakeholders, those taking landscape-scale action or promoting it, in the development of the global frameworks that will affect company investments on the ground.

This report is part of a global study that aims to understand how midstream and downstream companies have been using landscape and jurisdictional approaches to address commodity-driven deforestation. The study includes five commodity specific reports on cocoapalm oil, pulp, paper and packaging, beef and soy landscape-scale action as well as a final summary report. The study also delves deeper into other possible uses of these approaches, in this report on meeting corporate climate, nature and people goals.
