Science Based Targets for Land: Draft for Public Consultation
This draft document, developed by the SBTN Land Hub led by WWF-US and Conservation International (CI), provides guidance for companies to measure, set, and disclose Land science-based targets (SBTs), and explains how they align with other initiatives, including SBTi for climate. The Land SBTs are halting conversion of natural ecosystems, reducing agricultural land footprint, and landscape engagement to improve the ecological integrity of landscapes.
These land targets are designed to address impacts that climate targets are not able to and expand focus beyond forests to include other natural ecosystems linked to agriculture areas, the draft guidance said. SBTN expects these targets to incentivize companies to take regenerative, restorative, and transformative actions in areas beyond their direct value chain. Companies will be able to use the final guidance in the second quarter of 2023.
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is seeking inputs for its draft methodologies for companies to set the first land science-based targets that focus on the protection and restoration of ecosystems. Feedback must be provided through this online form by 7 March 2023.
