Learning Together to Accelerate Jurisdictional Action: A New Chapter for Our Network

We are pleased to announce that the management of Jurisdictional Action Network (JAN) and its knowledge hub jaresourcehub.org have transitioned from the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) to SourceUp, a reporting and learning exchange platform for landscape initiatives and their stakeholders developed by IDH.

This transition marks a major milestone in the evolution of JAN, a network of over 2,400 representatives of companies, NGOs, donors and other stakeholders supporting and using landscape and jurisdictional approaches (LJAs) to achieve sustainability at scale. Since its inception under TFA, an initiative hosted by the World Economic Forum (WEF), in 2020, JAN has become a central resource for learning and advancing LJAs. Now, under SourceUp’s stewardship, JAN is set to reach new audiences and drive even greater impact through closer connection with an active ecosystem of over 50 landscape initiatives around the world.

“We’re delighted to support the next phase of JAN as the place where the landscape community can exchange insights and learning.  If we are to accelerate the shift to sustainable land use and agriculture at scale, we have to be able to learn from each other, avoid re-inventing the wheel and ease the path to bigger and better collaboration,” said Matthew Spencer, Global Director of Landscapes at IDH. “We also hope to build synergies between SourceUp and JAN and invite the landscape community to help us identify where the greatest opportunities lie,” he added.

Strengthening Corporate Learning and Collaboration Around Landscape Approaches

LJAs are gaining traction in corporate sustainability strategies, with over 300 companies reporting taking landscape-scale action in 2024 – an increase of over 50% from 2022 – to CDP. Companies use LJAs to tackle complex issues like deforestation, farmer livelihoods, and human rights as well as to build resilience in sourcing regions and mitigate climate-related supply risks impacting crops such as palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and cotton.

The growing number of landscape initiatives and conveners highlights the need for a shared space to exchange knowledge, tools, and best practices. With SourceUp, JAN will continue to serve as a trusted hub where companies and practitioners can access guidance, align efforts, and strengthen both implementation and reporting around landscape action and progress.

“There are tremendous opportunities for collaboration between companies, government, civil society, producers, and local communities, to advance landscape approaches and help deliver sustainable development and resilience, at scale. It’s great to see the Jurisdictional Action Network and Resource Hub continuing to foster collaboration and information sharing in this space,” said Simon Hall, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Walmart.org and co-lead of the Landscapes Working Group at the Consumer Goods Forum’s Forest Positive Coalition of Action. The Coalition is a group of 21 major global retailers and manufacturers that use SourceUp to report and aggregate their members’ landscape-scale efforts.

Why the Transition Matters

The transition reflects a shared vision between SourceUp and TFA: to sustain and grow JAN as a leading community and platform for learning, connection, and action in support of sustainable land use and deforestation-free supply at scale.

SourceUp connects companies with landscape initiatives that align with their sourcing regions and sustainability goals. By integrating JAN, SourceUp will carry forward JAN’s knowledge base and link it more directly to field-level progress, private sector engagement, and live data reporting.

“JAN was created to connect and build momentum to a growing community of people and organisations working on landscape and jurisdictional approaches. The transition of JAN to SourceUp is a logical next step, as it connects the network with a platform that has landscape initiatives and the companies investing in them at its core,” said Jack Hurd, Executive Director of TFA. TFA will remain a key contributor to JAN, continuing to bring its deep expertise and collaborative spirit to the landscape and jurisdictional space.

What’s Next for JAN: Evolving With Purpose

As JAN enters a new chapter under SourceUp’s management, its core services will continue: the Jurisdictional Approaches Resource Hub website, the JAN newsletter, a regular programme of webinars and learning events, and knowledge products to facilitate learning across the practitioners. We will focus on actionable content and resources that help users take concrete steps toward landscape-scale action and connect with others doing the same.

“JAN has been instrumental in helping us share and refine collective thinking around landscape maturity and credible claims. We’re excited to continue collaborating and supporting stronger and strategic action on the ground,” said Patrick Mallet, Director of Innovations at ISEAL, one of JAN’s most active contributors.

A new key feature will be the integration of real-time landscape updates by initiatives on the SourceUp platform into the JA Resource Hub. This will ensure that users not only will be able to access curated tools and guidance, but also stay informed on the latest developments from the ground.

JAN remains a neutral, inclusive platform, open to all landscape and jurisdictional initiatives and stakeholders. Organisations and collaborators are welcome to share content, co-create resources, or explore new ways to grow JAN together.
