This Jurisdictional Action Network (JAN) webinar brought examples from East Kalimantan province and Musi Banyuasin district in Indonesia on how the local governments had translated their commitments to sustainable land use into local regulations and multi-stakeholder platforms. Representatives from Nestlé and Sedagho Siak, a coalition of CSOs in Siak district, drew from their experiences in jurisdictional engagement to showcase the key importance of local government commitments to provide an umbrella for work towards sustainable land use.
These stories from the ground strengthened findings from a recent study by TFA and Indonesia’s Sustainable Districts Association LTKL, who organised the webinar, on local governments’ commitments for sustainable land use in 53 districts, provinces, and states in Indonesia and Malaysia.

This Jurisdictional Exchange Network webinar did a deep-dive on practical ways that companies could engage in landscape and jurisdictional initiatives. Participants heard directly from PepsiCo and Musim Mas, two companies that have taken concrete action in key commodity-producing landscapes.
Participants also became familiar with the structure of the recently published Landscape Scale Action for Forests, People and Sustainable Production: A Practical Guide for Companies, the interventions within the guidance, and how to use it.
To complement learnings on the practical ways to engage, the ISEAL Alliance will introduce their Good Practice Guide on the Verification of Jurisdictional Claims. This was followed by a discussion of what kinds of claims companies could make, and the type and quality of data they looked for on jurisdictional performance.

Engaging in jurisdictional and landscape-scale initiatives is an increasingly important component of corporate strategies to tackle commodity-driven deforestation in supply chains. This webinar, part of a series co-hosted by the Tropical Forest Alliance, UNDP, Proforest, WWF and ISEAL Alliance, was designed specifically to help companies understand how to begin this journey, by looking at two of the most fundamental questions: why should companies engage, and where?
Drawing on recently published guidance to companies including UNDP’s Value Beyond Value Chains and Proforest’s Engaging with Landscape Initiatives, the webinar was an opportunity to get a strong understanding of these important elements, and to hear directly from companies on their own experiences.

The webinar showcased lessons learned from implementing LTKL’s Regional Competitiveness Framework (KDSD in Indonesian) in three pilot districts in Indonesia: Siak in Riau province, Sintang in West Kalimantan, and Gorontalo in Gorontalo. KDSD summarises key national policies on SDGs, emission reduction, and open government, and market-based frameworks with jurisdictional application, including RSPO P&C, Sustainable Landscape Rating Tools, Verified Sourcing Area, and Terpercaya.
At the webinar, LTKL representatives shared how the development of local multistakeholder teams has advanced KDSD implementation and data collection and highlighted the varying degrees of data availability across the districts. These findings are expected to inform future development of jurisdictional sustainability frameworks and the formulation of incentives, particularly from the private sector, to drive better performance in jurisdictions.

As jurisdictional initiatives start to be implemented around the world, we are slowly building a body of evidence about what works. This is being captured in part by measurement frameworks like IDH Verified Sourcing Areas and LandScale. ISEAL is supporting such initiatives by building alignment around the monitoring and verification practices that need to inform credible sustainability claims made by jurisdictional initiatives and the companies that source from them. In this webinar, ISEAL will present core ideas captured in their draft Good Practice Guide and explore how these can be of value to those that are supporting or implementing jurisdictional initiatives. The webinar is part of an ongoing ISEAL consultation.

Description
Global sustainability standards for commodities often go beyond the requirements of national laws. Jurisdictional approaches aim to apply these standards to all commodity producers in sub-national areas. In this webinar Forest Peoples Programme presents lessons emerging from a review of four jurisdictional approaches, in Sabah in Malaysia, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan in Indonesia and Ecuadorian Amazonia. The studies reveal the vital importance of respecting human rights, especially to land, and the need for a resolution of land disputes, if sustainability criteria and development agency policies are to be upheld. With inputs from government and indigenous panelists from Malaysia and Indonesia, FPP staff will lead an exploratory and interactive discussion on how to make Jurisdictional Approaches human rights compliant.
