Partnership between IDH Foundation and Banco do Nordeste expands access to rural credit in the Caatinga

This story is related to the landscape initiative “PPI Compact of the Apodi Sertão”, and originally published on SourceUp.

The partnership articulated by the Roots of the Caatinga Program seeks to reverse the scenario in which only 4.5% of family farmers in the biome access Pronaf, while most of the resources are concentrated in the South and Southeast. The advance began with the creation of Producer Service Centers (CAPs) by the IDH Foundation in the territories of Pajeú, in Pernambuco, Cariri Ocidental, in Paraíba, and in the Sertão do Apodi, in Rio Grande do Norte. By offering documentation, technical guidance and support for the preparation of projects, the CAPs began to unlock access to rural credit.

The initial diagnosis revealed farmers without an updated CAR, without land regularization or without personal documents. The performance of the CAPs caught the attention of Banco do Nordeste, which became part of the strategy. In the Sertão do Apodi, the number of farmers who accessed rural credit grew 127% after the arrival of the CAP, from 791 to 1,796, and the volume financed rose from R$ 13 million to R$ 31.9 million. The partnership also breaks cultural barriers and reinforces more sustainable production practices, in addition to encouraging cooperativism and agroecology.
