July 15, 2025 – Can you imagine a world where the private sector, landscape conveners, farmers, governments, and civil society organisations, join forces to make supply chains more resilient than ever before? What if there was a clear roadmap to guide all these actors in achieving their sustainability goals in the long term?
With the goal of providing both conveners and companies a solution, SourceUp developed its Landscape Maturity feature, which offers a structured approach to assess the foundational strengths of landscape initiatives.
Why Landscape Maturity Matters
In September 2024, ISEAL Alliance launched the “Core Criteria for Mature Landscape Initiatives”, a collaboration among 20 leading landscape practitioner organisations, including SourceUp, and facilitated by the ISEAL Alliance and CDP. They serve as building blocks for landscape initiatives, guiding them through actions that will make them more resilient, more likely to create long-term impact, and ultimately also more attractive to investors.
For companies, the Landscape Maturity framework serves as a roadmap to identify and support resilient landscape initiatives, or those with a clear roadmap to reach maturity. By understanding the maturity level of a landscape, companies can:
- Mitigate Risks: Invest in initiatives with a strong foundation, reducing the risk of failure and ensuring long-term impact.
- Drive Sustainability: Contribute to systemic change by supporting initiatives that align with their sustainability goals and have a estructured approach to improve their resilience.
For landscape conveners, the framework provides a pathway to strengthen their initiatives and attract investment. By assessing their maturity, conveners can:
- Identify Improvement Areas: Pinpoint weaknesses and focus on enhancing governance, scale, collective actions, and monitoring.
- Attract Funding: Demonstrate their initiative’s potential and resilience, making it more attractive to investors and donors.
- Foster Collaboration: Engage with companies and stakeholders more effectively by showcasing their commitment to sustainability.
An Exemplary Case: Strengthening Multi-Stakeholder Governance to Combat Deforestation in Indonesia

In district Sintang, a biodiversity-rich region within the Heart of Borneo, the “Addressing deforestation in Indonesia through through multiple stakeholders” The “Platform at Landscape Scale” initiative exemplifies the effective use of SourceUp’s Landscape Maturity function. Using this tool, the initiative has assessed its resilience
To further its commitment to sustainability, the Sintang District has undertaken a comprehensive LandScale Evaluation. This assessment provides a holistic assessment of landscape sustainability across four pillars: Ecosystems, Governance, Human Welfare, and Production. By measuring performance in these areas, the district gains valuable insights that inform stakeholders, including the private sector, governments, and civil society.
