Draft Consensus Statement on High Quality Tropical Forest Carbon Credits

The Tropical Forest Credit Integrity Alliance, a coalition of civil society organisations comprising the Amazon indigenous group COICA, Conservation International, the Environmental Defense Fund, Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Wildlife Conservation Society, World Resources Institute, and WWF-US, published this Draft Consensus Statement on High Quality Tropical Forest Carbon Credits in Nov. 2021 to provide guidance to companies seeking to purchase such credits. The draft Statement asserts that corporate demand can help drive the supply of forest carbon credits toward higher quality. It recommends a rapid transition to jurisdictional-scale crediting for forest-based emissions reductions and removals, including fully-nested projects.

The Meridian Institute, which facilitated the development of the draft statement, are seeking feedback from diverse stakeholders to ensure the guidance for companies is widely supported, clear, and actionable. They intend to consider the input and issue a final Consensus Statement after the consultation period ends on 15 February 2022.
